Listening Assignment: Introductory Concepts To complete this assignment you must choose one piece of music from Section 1: Basic Musical Concepts. This includes any of the music stated in classes 2 through 6; and write a two-paragraph summary. Your summary must include the following to receive full credit: The name and composer of the selection. The location of the selection which should include the class number and title of the lesson (e.g. Class 3: The Structure of the Music) A short analysis of the piece from the point of view of a Referential Listener. (Read the description of the Referential Listener in Class 3 carefully, and use the attributes listed to analyze the selection.) Finally, indicate what musical “concept” is illustrated by the selection (e.g. musical idea, variety, solo performer, has a purpose, etc.). The concept will be determined by the subject of the location (class and lesson) of the selection. If you should choose a selection from Class 3: the Structure of Music, you would need to state that the piece of music was an example of two-part or three-part form. If you choose something from class 6: Folk Music, Art Music, and All That Jazz, you would need to state which of these three genres your music selection exemplifies.
