***Make a Comment*** Due to the warm weather, Florida and Arizona are quite similar in terms of retirees and snowbirds. Just driving around Tucson this time of year, the increase in license plates from the midwest and other colder climates is quite noticeable. Because the census counts residents in the areas where they live and sleep the most or in the current location at the time of the census (if usual residency cannot be determined) (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020), this population may or may not be counted among the demographics of the areas where they winter. Thus, during certain times of the year, warmer places like Florida and Arizona may actually experience a higher 65-and-older population than is indicated in the census data. This phenomenon also presents challenges in healthcare. While the snowbird population is generally healthier and of higher income, they make more frequent visits to emergency departments, including primary care treatable ED visits, in warmer, southern states, potentially due to their lack of primary care physicians in these areas (Jeffery, et al., 2018). This certainly is a complex issue which will require accurate data and multiple disciplines to address.
