Overview This week, we’ve been learning about the history of the study of human variation and problematizing the concept of race. Now, I’d like you to explore the Understanding Race (Links to an external site.) website and reflect on this virtual exhibit. Objective Critique earlier “race” concepts based on overall human diversity being lower compared to other species and human genetic variation being greater within a population than between populations. Relate a more nuanced view of human variation with todays ongoing bioanthropological research, implications for biomedical studies, applications in forensic anthropology, and sociopolitical/economic concerns. Go through at least a few of the interactive activities — at least one each in the “human variation (Links to an external site.)” and “lived experience (Links to an external site.)” groups. Then write a reflection paragraph of about 200 words. Did you learn anything? What stood out? Do you have any critiques? Why should anthropologists understand these histories and lived realities?
