The Twentieth Century conveyed a whole new sense of musical variety and musical influence through the innovation of styles such as impressionism, primitivism, expressionism, experimentalism, electronic music, Neoclassicism, American nationalism, Neo Romanticism and minimalism. Revolution and evolution are certainly themes that bring forth new ways of approaching music and new musical philosophies during this period in our history.

Compare and contrast two pieces of music representing two different musical styles and composers of the Twentieth Century: one that is from our textbook (Part VI: Chapters 25-28) to one that is written by a different composer discussed in our textbook (Part VI: Chapters 25-28).

What similarities and/or differences do you hear within the form, melody, harmony, rhythm, lyrics, etc. of each piece? Can you distinguish “revolutionary” characteristics (“entirely new means of music expression”) or “evolutionary” characteristics (“adapted traditional music techniques”) in each piece (see pages 237–239)? How so? Of the two pieces selected, which composer do you think contributed the most during this important period and why? What did he or she contribute and what was musically and historically significant or influential about the contribution(s)? Of the two pieces selected, which piece do you think has most significantly impacted the Twentieth Century and why?
